The Mad Hatter (Z Zegna)

Milan… By far one of the favorite shows of the week, Z Zegna’s Alessandro Sartori decided to bring one of Italy’s crown jewel brands back to its home in Milan after showing in New York for many seasons. Presented at the company’s amazing new glass and steel corporate headquarters, the collection came off as a homage to the dandified past while exploring notions of the future. The theme was labeled “Street Dandy” on the show notes, indicating the interest in showing a bit of eclectic artistry that is “never subject to rules.” The top hats were some of the standout characters of this Edwardian play, finishing off suppressed waist jackets with watch chains and tails. An interesting modern update to cargo pockets wound around many of the tailored jackets, certainly something to think about. Besides the mostly inky blue and icy grey solids, a few graffiti prints made their way to woven shirts, just like something you’d see on the Milanese streets. There was also a grouping of bold blue pieces that created a pleasant pop. Layered lapels on much of the outerwear and tailoring brought a whole new dimension to what could be deemed a classic item, instead giving an added bonus of texture and shine. Thespat boots really made the Victorian dream come alive. With such a strong point of view, it will be so exciting to see what Satori has in store for his futuristic dandies.

more shiny and matte pairings! i love this play of dimension and light. also, those ankle boots do something really great with the silhouette of those pants.

i know a certain vintage editor who must have loved this show…

    Love the new hat proportions…

  • The duo-colored trench reminds me of the Viktor & Rolf F/W 09 women’s collection.
