WGSN sat front row as the future of film talent was revealed. WGSN’s Director of Womenswear & Colour Jane Boddy reports
Last night (3rd Feb) Nick Knight announced the winner of the first ever SHOWstudio fashion film award winner. Attended by a British fashion royalty Daphne Guinness, Stephen Jones and other high players in the industry.
This was the first competition of its kind and the award is the latest development in Nick Knights’ promotion of fashion & moving image. He talked as part of a panel discussion at the event with judges including Designer Gareth Pugh, SHOWstudio’s editor Lou Stoppard, Dan Thawley, editor-in-chief (of A Magazine Curated By) and fashion historian Nathalie Khan.
Nick Knight talked extensively about his experiences and passion for moving image within fashion, and how this could be as simple as a gif or as advanced as his involvement in Alexander McQueen’s final catwalk show Plato’s Atlantis that had moving cameras filming the catwalk and front row livestreaming at the same time, the first event of its kind.
Heavy debate took place amongst the panellists talking about whether fashion film could replace the catwalk show?
Gareth Pugh who often works with fashion film said that you could never replace the importance of the fashion event, even if there isn’t a physical catwalk show for the season, you can still showcase the clothes through an exclusive screening during fashion week.
Then it was on to the future talent part of the evening.
The 10 SHOWstudio film finalists covered a broad spectrum of concepts and ideas, my personal favourite was by a Romanian trio Carioca with there almost Mcqueenesque film Damned spirit.
But the winner was a captivating insight into the creative underground of Moscow by Russian Maksim Bashkaev. Called Outlaw the film focused on the topic of outlawed people who take the alternative route, combining the mixed cultural patterns of the Empire and Soviet eras. Maksim wins 10k to create a film, which will be mentored by Nick Knight as well as a trip to Australia to promote his work there.
