In its latest effort to foster community development and enterprise, English community development pioneer Bootstrap Company has installed a roof top park on top of an historic print mill. Located in Dalston, a highly urban area in East London, the park will offer “a green space in an area of very few.”
The Dalston Roof Park promotes sustainability and community engagement from the ground up- proving that urban agricultural gardens and green spaces are possible with spacial and financial restrictions. With the help of local volunteers and donated grow bags from Vital Earth, The Dalston Roof Park is now in phase one of development with a fully sustainable vegetable and medicinal plant garden. In an effort to corral local involvement, the Bootstrap Company brands the park as an outdoor community center, offering a host of activities from yoga classes and planting workshops to BBQ’s throughout the summer. For members of the park, there is a cafe and bar housed in a garden shed.
The garden will be open until September. Along with the many other amenities the green space has to offer, members have a partnership role in helping to determine the next phase of development.
