There is no doubt that the re-invention of the classic book bag satchel has been one of the most important bag trends for women over the past few seasons with the Proenza Schouler PS1 and the Mulberry Alexa whipping us into a frenzy of nostalgic functionality. More recently we have been spotting a more traditional school bag take on this look, and have become familiar with the Cambridge Satchel Company.
The collection is founded on vintage designs realized in hardy smooth leathers, with a clean, unfussy silhouette that instantly recalls vintage children’s styles.
What initially began as a table top business, started up by a mother-and-daughter team in the U.K., has grown to become a multi-million pound enterprise, selling 1,500 bags a week. The timing of the brand launch could not have been better, and coupled with the true british feel of the quaint accessories they have rapidly become a must-have item for young fashion consumers.
Solidifying their fashion kudos, Commes Des Garçons collaborated with Cambridge Satchel Company earlier this year to produce four laptop-sized bags in neon leathers, which promptly sold out at the infamous Dover Street Market store.
The unlikely fashion entrepreneurs have expressed surprise at the popularity of their bags, co-founder Julie Deane stated “I honestly thought my market would be school children,”and revealed that the inspiration came from an unexpected place. “I was quite obsessed with satchels at the time, because I was reading Harry Potter to my children and I wanted to find them, because they are exactly what Harry and Hermione would have used at Hogwarts.”
