Last Sunday I ran the London marathon. The 26.2 mile run took me through the capital city I call home. As a long distance runner, I was hoping to smash a PB (personal best) in my home turf but my legs just wasn’t having it on race day. But, through sheer determination plus the amazing support of the crowd (who gave me sweets and bananas as I walked the last 10k) and my fellow runners, I made it. The pain of my legs outweighs the highs of crossing the finishing line. I won’t be running another marathon anytime soon, but I can’t wait to get back to the gym. So to help muscle recovery, here are my top post-run TLC products and treatments to soothe away the pain and get me back to peak health.
A full body massage is the ultimate post-marathon remedy to help aid muscle recovery and treat those sore, achy and hardworking legs. Elemis’ Poultice Powered Muscle Release uses hot amber, quartz, eucalyptus and juniper poultice to release tension on the body, while you lay on a heated bed filled with tiny amber and quartz crystals. Instead of the facial, the lovely therapist Hannah B finished the treatment with a shoulder massage to unleash all the tight knots in my upper body. Sixty minutes of total bliss and relaxation.
Mio’s Workout Wonder is my new BFF. This invigorating muscle gel is made from a cocktail blend of energizing extracts including V-Tonic (an uplifting essential oil made from citrus, lavender, menthol, cypress and spearmint) to recharge muscles and increase circulation to speed up recovery. I also love the cooling sensation as it helps to erase muscle pain, while the minty scent leaves a fresh aroma.
3. Margaret Dabbs
Margaret Dabbs is the go-to expert for foot and hand treatments, plus she has also run a few marathons too as I’ve been told. The Margaret Dabbs Sole Spa is nestled on the basement of Liberty London and the Medical Pedicure Treatment is simply divine. My lovely podiatrists Tamara and nail therapist Gosia tended to my sore tootsies and gave me some great tips on how to look after my feet. The treatment is performed on dry feet using a range of high-tech gadgets. The result? My tootsies were left with smooth and baby soft soles free of calluses and my toe nails were trimmed, buffed and painted (in a coral red) to perfection.
4. Cloud 9
A hot Epsom salt bath followed by a massage gel is the perfect post-run remedy. I’m currently using Cloud 9 Skin Solutions Body Makeover – a skin firming body gel and cellulite treatment that features key extracts of ivy (great for boosting blood and lymphatic flow), gotu kola, caffeine, horse chestnut seed, grape seed and vitamin E. On first application, you may experience a tingling sensation and a tiny bit of redness but don’t be scared off by it, this is the gel working its magic on the skin.
