The Beauty-Full Week: 5 makeup essentials for the party season

Party Makeup look

There’s just over two weeks left until Christmas Day (not that I’m counting down), the party season is now under way, and I’m beginning to get into the festive spirit. With the diary packed with social events with family and friends and the office Christmas parties ahead, the festive season is the perfect time to try out something a little bit daring and different in the makeup department to compliment the LBD or sparkly gown.

Here are my top 5 make-up essentials to see you through the party season.

1. Glitter Nails
The only time I ever wear glitter is at Christmas (or at Halloween) and while I’m not brave enough to wear it on my face or on my hair (remember the glitter root trend from last year?), I love a bit of sparkle on my fingertips. This ‘Across the Universe’ nail polish from Deborah Lippmann is the perfect partner to glam up my simple LBD. I’ll be wearing it on both my fingers and toes for an extra shot of twinkle. The lacquer is also infused with good-for-the-nail treatment benefits, thanks to extracts of biotin, green tea and aucoumea, so while it may look pretty and glitzy on the outside, it’s also doing some serious extra goodness for the nails too.

2.Hypnotic Eyes

I have a love/hate relationship with false eyelashes. I instantly fall in love with them when I first put them on (they make my almond-shape eyes pop) but a couple of hours later, I just want to rip them off (they feel heavy and make me sleepy). The last time I wore a pair of false lashes was at my best friend’s wedding and the make-up artist did a stellar job by creating a sultry smoky eye teamed with the most beautiful set of falsies I have ever worn. This Christmas, I’m going to attempt this look again and what better occasion than the party season to try something a little bit more va-va-voom. Finding the right false eyelash shape is the key – anything too long and dramatic can make me look doll-like and childish. This one from Nars (from the limited edition Sarah Moon Holiday colour collection) comes with a cascading shape that nicely frames the eyes and creates a bold but natural look that will no doubt get you noticed on the dance floor.

3. Dark Lips

You can’t go wrong with a classic red lipstick, but for this party season I’ll be wearing something a little bit more daring. Dark lips were undeniably the biggest trend for lips on the autumn/winter 2016/17 catwalks, championed by the likes of Max Mara, Marni, Christian Dior, Rodarte and Bottege Veneta. The cosmetics brands are also getting in on the act, launching winter berry shades, from plum to beet red and wine, in their colour collections. One of my favourite is the Bete Noire Lipstick by Lipstick Queen, which comes in a flattening blackberry shade (available in three different finishes: matte, sheer and metallic) and it’s infusion of highly moisturizing oils and anti-oxidant vitamin E means pouts stay beautiful all night long.

4. Smoky Blue Eyes

I’m not usually very creative when it comes to bold eye make-up on a night out – a slick of black mascara and gel eyeliner is as far as I go. However, this Christmas I’m going to attempt something a bit more daring and try out a blue smoky eye for the party season. This little double-decker pot in Night Sky from Tom Ford holds two products in one – a luminous creamy eye colour and a celestial-like powder eyeshadow, designed to be layered together or worn alone to create different looks for all those dinner parties and festive social events in the calendar.

5. Face Glow

Highlighters and illuminators are a godsend beauty must-have especially at this time of the year with a busy social calendar and late nights that can take a heavy toll on the skin. It’s my secret make-up weapon to achieve a fresh, dewy glow that you get when you step out of the gym after a grueling cardio workout. This new limited edition face palette from Laura Mercier contains four illuminating powders that imparts a lovely natural radiance on the skin and suits pretty much all skin tones.
