For those residing in the UK, summer has finally arrived, bringing with it a constant wall of scorching heat – anything over 20 degrees feels tropical to us – and resulting in swathes of zombie-esque folk moaning and groaning as they try to cope in a city that feels like it’s melting.
We’re not equipped for the heat here, you see. Nowhere has air con, the underground subway system is like a cess-pit of sweat and body odour (excuse the image) and even our homes offer little respite, more often than not built to keep the heat in, not stop it at the front door. All in all, this week has been a struggle for many, so I’ve pulled together a quick check-list of cooling beauty products that will help bring that temperature down a peg or two, and hopefully make walking into a meeting after dripping through a commute that little bit more bearable.
1. Temple Spa Aaahhh!:
I happened to have my first experience with this product on the hottest day of the year so far, so suffice to say I instantly fell in love. Infused with dandelion extract, frankincense, lavender and menthol, it has the power to send a cooling shiver right through the skin and into your very core – or so it felt. Apply to the pressure points for instant gratification, or rub into aching legs and feet after a long day traipsing around the baking hot streets.
2. Milk Cooling Water:
This one’s to help with that sweaty face feeling. Not wanting to ruin a perfectly applied face of make-up, but in desperate need of a little refresh? Then this handy gel stick is your new best friend. Dab onto the face, neck and even the body and be hit with a blast of soothing seawater and firming caffeine to cool down even in the most trying of situations. Stow in your handbag to use as a squished tube carriage saviour, and it’ll even help de-puff those eyes on mornings when sleep eluded you thanks to a sauna of a bedroom.
3. The Body Shop Peppermint Reviving Foot Soak:
This type of weather doesn’t exactly bode well for our tootsies. Even the best sandal collection in the world can’t fend off the inevitable day-end swelling and heat exhaustion, so a refreshing and revitalising soak scrub is the perfect antidote. This peppermint variety from The Body Shop is a cult favourite, renowned for its cooling qualities thanks to effervescent salts that quickly rid you of both odour and swell. Fancy feet for all.
4. Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels:
These won’t necessarily cool you down, but they will definitely help with that aforementioned eye puffiness that plagues us when the evenings are long and the night too hot for a truly restful slumber. A transdermal gel patch infused with potent actives and Icelandic glacial water, the result is an under eye area that is firmer, brighter, less puffy and hopefully less prone to wrinkles too.
5. FaceGym Oxygen Workout
Available at Selfridges, this 25 minute treatment is a wee gem of a sensory experience. Designed to tone and tighten the face, it is the shot of ice cold oxygen delivered at high pressure for high impact that really seals the deal. Penetrating atomised active ingredients deep within the skin, you’ll leave refreshed, radiant and a little more youthful looking, with a body temperature ready to withstand anything the sun throws at you.
