It hit a retro nerve and fashion fell in love with the pieces and the styling. WGSN Associate West Coast Denim Editor Lourdes Linares reports
Back in January this year, Alexa Chung hit something of a retro fashion nerve, when she debuted her first collaboration with AG jeans. The success of the line was a sure hit with the fashion crowd and bang-on-trend considering the current the wave of 1970s-inspired styling.
Her on-point thrift-inspired pieces had fashion bloggers and celebrities reaching for the signature styles like pixie shirtdress, cropped flares, retro rompers and a-line button skirts. So it came as no surprise when we heard about the second instalment “Girl-Gang” that recently dropped for A/W 15/16 in stores worldwide.
Following in the same vein as the debut (and very ubiquitous) Spring collection, the winter line is packed with late 1960s and early 1970s styles that the multi-talented It girl has reimagined for today. “I found myself drawn to motorcycle-gang and juvenile delinquent imagery, but it was hard to find the same type of imagery in women’s street style,” she told Refinery29. “So it’s actually less about the idea of a gang, and more about that attitude, toughness, and personalisation that I took inspiration from.”
By now you would’ve no doubt have read and maybe browsed through the new 21-piece denim collection, but for any readers who haven’t we’ve pulled together a selection of our favourite denim looks and pieces from the line. Carryover styles as well as some new additions get a sleek winter update with raw denim constructions and rich black shades that give a more contemporary feel to the retro-chic styles.
Highlights include the cropped Sloe Black Jacket, the long-sleeve Loretta Hardy romper and our personal favourite the high-waisted Sabine cropped skinny that oozes retro-flair. Dark indigo, plush baby-corduroy and cashmere-merino fabrics add an extra touch of winter cool.
The Autumn collection, shot in Los Angeles by photographer Tyrone LeBon, continues that timeless-retro attitude beautifully. The “girl-gang” collection is in stores now worldwide and also available on the AG Jeans website.
