THREE RING CIRCUS
With its exaggerated top hats, heavy makeup and high-tech projection presentation, one might think Alice Temperley’s collection was all about a show. When dissected, however, its pieces hit just the right note for the Junior or Contemporary customer looking for a forward take on fall’s edgy menswear and body-con looks. The British designer was inspired by the circus of the 1920s and 30s, which was evidenced in bold harlequin prints, vertical stripes and an abundance of oversized bowties. Unlike her fellow London designer Manish Arora, whose former circus-themed collection was so so literal that some items were equipped with rotating carousels, Temperly demonstrated her knack for taking an offbeat theme and making it translatable for the mass market.
