Clockwise (Left to Right): Paris streets; Marni F/W 09; Alexander Wang S/S 09; Muhammad Ali photographed by Peter Angelo Simon in early ’60s; New York streets; Mjolk F/W 09; Isabel Marant S/S 09; Paris streets; Band of Outsiders F/W 09
Without a doubt, one of the coolest looks our editors have started noticing on the streets & runways (for both men and women) is a well-fitting sweat pant mixed with a tailored jacket, transitional outerwear piece, or a washed and rugged woven shirt. Typically, we would never condone such a risky styling technique, but for whatever reason it works for these trendsetters, creating a really young and fresh look. Fashion Office favorite, Band of Outsiders, even showed a fleece tuxedo pant worn with a cropped double-breasted blazer and toggle coat for F/W 09.
This modern juxtaposition is the perfect choice for a lazy Sunday afternoon of shopping or a spontaneous brunch. To avoid the dreaded “frumpy and unkempt” label, the pant should be somewhat tailored, worn with appropriately casual shoes like Topsiders or ankle boots and finished off with a contrasting dressy top like a classic blazer or trench coat.
