Ahh those lazy days of summer…time spent drowsily napping in the sun, while a cool river gurgles softly nearby. Yeah right. This is New York, the city that never sleeps…or naps…not even on a summer weekend! Come to think of it, especially not on a summer weekend. Mine was a bit jam packed as they tend to be. On Saturday, Christina and I headed out to Long Island City, Queens to check out James Murphy and Pat Mahoney’s outdoor DJ set at PS1. The grounds of the contemporary art center (yes, it really used to be a public school – dating back to 1893) have been converted this summer into “urban farmland”. The grounds appear to have gone a bit eco-friendly – there was blossoming vegetation, live chickens(!), and a generally renewable, recyclable vibe. This turned out to be eggxactly what the crowd was looking for as they all seem renewed with energy when Murphy and Mahoney started their set. Their vintage disco tunes were perfect for the crowd and the space – a unique meeting of DJs and venue and the best time I’ve ever had at PS1. The vibe was – as usual – decidedly European. Lots of Euro accents among the crowd and a Berlin-like atmosphere with a couple thousand people dancing crazily outdoors. We stayed until the end (the whole crowd did) and then came back into the city to have dinner at La Esquina. From there, we popped by The Randolph to see my friend Lindsay for a minute. We were heading over to Country Club to meet Mia, but then Mia told me she and Katy and kids were still on Long Island where Katy had just played a show – so we went to the Rusty Knot for a bit instead. Soon we met up with Mia and Katy and Markus and other kids and then Shwayze were playing live all of a sudden and I was talking to Erin and Katy has had the number one song in the country for six weeks in a row now on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and I still need a nap. x eddie
