Styling tips: How to wear velvet (come rain or shine)

For many of us, plush velvet is a fabric that should only be seen around late October in time for Halloween, but this season the catwalks have reclaimed the fabric as well as high-street retailers too.

Velvet can be rocked late summer, all the way into the following spring, you just have to style it right. For late summer, opt for autumnal reds or deep blue dresses teamed with a thin knit sweater or classic white tee and sandals.

Then for A/W16 velvet will be the fabric du jour, but rather than heavy and overbearing, look out for the elegant velvet as seen on the Milan catwalks in the form of softly tailored outerwear, creating loungewear-inspired silhouettes with a refined appeal. You can opt for a full relaxed suit, or dip your toes into the trend with one key piece like a velvet trucker jacket. And whether your budget is high end luxury or high-street, there are options for you:
