Besides his ‘80s/’90s inspired clothes, I love New York based designer Benjamin Cho for the following reasons:
1. He’s a homemade tattoo enthusiast.
2. He DJs Morrissey Night every Sunday at Sway.
3. He dropped out of Parsons and started his own line at 21.
4. He still hand sews everything in his apartment.
BENJAMIN CHO SPRING/SUMMER ’07
Though I can’t see many people wearing these shorts, that doesn’t make me love them any less. They’re instantly recognizable and would be perfect for a clubbing costume, what with their oversized buttons, piping and bizarre volume.
Zippers as embellishments were a huge part of his SS 07 collection, giving otherwise classic sheath dresses a rough twist.
I saw a picture of Cho wearing this zippered cut out heart shirt and it was, inarguably, one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen a boy wear. This skirt reminds me of a birdcage somehow, a beautiful, weirdly proportioned birdcage that happens to look great over a dress.
BENJAMIN CHO FALL/WINTER ’07
From sequins to oversized gems, sparkly jewels of all kinds graced Cho’s FW 07 collection. If I had to marry a mini dress, the one on the right would be my choice (it’s that perfect.)
Everyone lost their minds when Commes des Garcons incorporated creepy fake hands into their FW 07 collection, but guess what? They weren’t the only ones.
When I was little I had a tiny blue plastic dog with a red heart shaped rhinestone on its belly. I think Benjamin Cho may have had the same toy, because he’s obsessed with stylized hearts, incorporating them into both his SS and FW collections.
Why don’t more people use these?! Cho is gaining a reputation for his use of oversized buttons, and while they’re gimmicky and have been done in the past, they’re just so damn FUN!
