London: “It’s about looking at those staples, the pieces we all turn to as women, but I want more out of them, I want to say something with my clothes.” explained McCartney. She did just that: breathing new life into a wardrobe of essentials: ribbed turtlenecks with a scatter of delicate brass buttons, elegant coats cut in modern lines, updated with metallic plexi dish buttons. Knits were paired together but reconstructed from mixed weight panels falling asymmetrically in an unexpected, delightful twist. A psychedelic garden print in collaboration with illustrator Will Sweeny ingrained Stella’s sense of humour into the collection, along with a pounce of jewel coloured wildcats decorating minimalistic cut evening separates and a flowing shirt dress. The show stealers included a duo of extravagant “Fur free fur” crimped longhaired jerkin coats, in rich autumnal hues, clinched at the waist. An exquisite master class in day-to-night dressing. – Anna Ross
