New York: As she is best known for sophisticated separates, sometimes one forgets about Stella McCartney’s kooky side (see S/S 11‘s ebullient citrus prints). For Cruise/Resort 13, McCartney revisited the more playful part of her personality. Punchy tones, chintz-inspired prints, and exaggerated silhouettes all made for a memorable collection. While there seemed to be a higher proportion of attention-grabbing pieces than usual, there were still plenty of the easy basics that McCartney’s clients crave. Slouchy pants were chic in their nonchalance, and blazers looked perfect, shown in both oversized and tailored versions. Dramatically flared trousers in eye-popping tones were somewhat of a surprise, but they worked well paired with other brights for a color blocked look. McCartney veered into softer territory with a series of pieces made from layered lace and fringe. They were just offbeat enough to sit well with the other striking looks in the collection. –Joanna Manganaro
