Paris: At first it seemed Stella McCartney was headed in a slightly florid direction for F/W 12, at least by the designer’s standard of simple practicality. There were curling brocade pattern embroideries and ghostly tonal wallpaper prints, as well as shiny jacquard suiting in a leafy head-toe-toe motif, their embellished appearance made modern by a strict palette of black, white and cobalt. But soon McCartney switched gears and returned to solid monochrome looks full of cozy texture; body conscious cable-knit skirt suits and a stunning hourglass sweater dress. The designer’s signature sporty pieces weren’t far behind, including the fit-and-flare silhouettes of last season, but this time the ergonomic patchwork colorblocking combined satin and tweed for an interesting and seasonally appropriate update.—Nina Stotler
