“Exhibit Displaying Artwork Raises Awareness In The Fight Against Cancer”
Last week, New York’s iconic Deitch Projects, celebrated the opening of STAGES. A traveling art exhibit curated by Lance Armstrong and Nike, STAGES aims to raise global awareness for the Lance Armstrong Foundation in the fight against cancer.
Ed Ruscha Acrylic on linen, 61cm x 89cm
The exhibit will run from October 31 – November 21 2009, offering New Yorkers an opportunity to view works from some of the most celebrated visionaries in the contemporary art world including KAWS, Tom Sachs, Cai-Guo Qiang, Ed Ruscha and Richard Prince.

Tom Sachs, Carbon fiber Trek Madone with mixed media
Richard Prince, Collage and acrylic on canvas, 117cm x 86cm
The featured artists felt an intense connection to the project, as the works themselves spoke to the cause in a myriad of voices and interpretations. Mediums varied, including a ring of yellow hand carved wooden pushpins from Geoff McFetridge. “Warm to the touch” although intentionally simple, was meant to symbolize unity and strength. Other artists used this opportunity as a therapeutic exercise, Eric White — applauded for his ability to render intricate photorealistic oil-based paintings — was inspired by his mother, a two-time survivor of oral cancer. This specific painting was, in his words, a “struggle to complete” as it symbolized her personal battle with the illness.

“By bringing together a diverse pool of artists from all walks of life, STAGES, is a testament to the devastating connection the disease has with many and how that connection can both confront and inspire through art.”

Following its stay in New York, the STAGES art exhibit will conclude with a stop in Miami in early December as part of Art Basel Miami Beach. For more information about the project please visit STAGES09
