Sonia Rykiel

Paris: Sonia Rykiel is legendary in Paris and beyond, for both her knitwear and her runway joie de vivre, closing shows with effervescent, dancing models. The classic knit stripes were still around for S/S 11, in a lively but sophisticated palette of nude, red, yellow and tan, but the designer also chose to add a few distinctly Asian elements to the collection. Kimono sleeves, tassels and obi belts spoke to this Eastern influence, while other elements, like confetti-like paillettes and bow-tied sandals displayed Rykiel’s signature mirth. Overall, the flattering cosmetic color scheme, merged with this season’s 70s pieces like culottes and clingy sweaters, led to a successful update to Rykiel’s distinctive niche.
