163 years ago today the Smithsonian Institution was founded on August 10, 1864. Now with 19 museums and over 136 million items in the collection, this organization has a serious catalogue. Among the millions of items is a collection of clothing from the suits of presidents to old Halloween costumes. Over 300,000 fashion items illustrate the changing style of America from the 1700s to the present. Below is just a tiny fraction of some of the treasures de la mode that the Smithsonian contains.
