Smartened-up utility at Margaret Howell

A lightness of touch that came through in both the sharp silhouettes and fine tailoring fabrics lent this collection a crispness slightly at odds with the usual heavy duty focus on utility favourites at Margaret Howell, emphasising a new, relaxed take on more formal menswear classics instead. Smart casual suiting is something the brand excels at and this season was no exception, with signature boxy blazers and cropped tapered or wide-leg trousers proving as timeless and versatile as ever. Other strengths like knits and outerwear also lived up to expectations, from fine-gauge polo-neck sweaters to double-breasted shearling coats, and again the feel was slightly more refined and less rugged. The clever balance of function and smartness here ensured that long-term clients and newcomers alike would have plenty to get excited about. – Ben Perdue
