Six Delicious Days: Kirin Ichiban Pops Up in London

For one week only, Kirin Ichiban is bringing a deliciously deep-fried slice of Japan to London, with their pop-up yatai (street food stand) on Brick Lane.

The super-cute Kirin Ichiban Yatai Pop-Up Restaurant features kushiage, a Japanese favorite consisting of bite-sized bits of breaded meat and veggies loaded onto skewers, fried to order and served with dipping sauce. Grab a seat at the open-air stand and sample any three kushiage for just £5, or add edamame and gelato-style ice cream in either Red Bean or Black Sesame for a complete meal.

You will, of course, want to order a refreshingly cold Kirin Ichiban beer (£3 bottle, £4 pint), the perfect complement to all this deep-fried goodness. And just who is in charge of all this deliciousness? None other than Yasuhiro Mineno (former head chef at Nobu) and Shinya Ikeda, joint owners and head chefs of London’s storied Yashin Sushi restaurant. This dynamic duo is planning to open an all kushiage restaurant in 2012, and are using the yatai as a place to experiment and expose Londoners to this traditional Japanese fare.

While you savor panko-crusted morsels of chicken, pork, asparagus or tofu, short films from the four finalists of the Kirin First Cut Short Film Competition play in the background on small screens, and you can even vote for your favorite, with the winner announced at the 55th BFI London Short Film Festival. You can also place a silent bid on any of the large-scale street style artworks found near the yatai, custom made by the Soulful Gallery art collective, with all proceeds from the auction going to the Japan Society Tohoku Earthquake Relief Fund.
