Signage Pop Art – David Buckingham

The Stylesight Graphics team has been tracking pop artist David Buckingham through his recent creative explosion and his collaboration with Wrangler Blue Bell.

Buckingham trawls the Southern California deserts, abandoned factories, dodgy neighborhoods and scrap yards searching for parts of old machinery, cars and planes. These pieces have a certain used look caused by weathering. These beautifully aged and battered relics are transformed by Buckingham into stunning visual statements that have a modern day Pop Art sensibility to them.

Buckingham’s welded metal wall works and U.S. vintage look fits perfectly with Wrangler’s latest Blue Bell collection. The artist worked with Wrangler on its “made in the U.S.A” F/W 11 collection. The Stylesight Graphics team was lucky enough to see some of his work earlier this year at the Rin Tanaka Inspiration vintage event in Los Angeles. Wrangler commissioned the artist to create two special works of art in his studio in Downtown, Los Angeles that experiment with the brand’s logo and American symbolism.

Buckingham explains:

My work, in general, is about boundaries: finding where the line is, and then gently crossing it. Most of my work is very personal. I was a professional writer for 20 years before metal sculpture became my magnificent obsession, so you’ll see a lot of text in the work. I love language in all its forms: chance remarks I heard decades ago reverberate in my head like I heard them yesterday, classic American TV shows, snippets of film dialogue, a smart-ass comment. Any of that can make its way out of my head and into my work.

Graphically speaking, these pieces make a really powerful visual statement. The color, aged texture and bold recycled looks give Buckingham’s work real modern edge. We love the idea of giving authentic disused signage and old metalwork pieces new life in graphic expression.
