She sells Seashells

What to say about Donatella Versace? Perhaps that she clearly made a decision a few seasons ago to leave the more outré notions of selling sex to the younger crowd and focus more on a sweet and sophisticated design ideal. The irony is that as a result the collections themselves have a new zest that will appeal to a more youthful customer. She filled the S/S 09 line with plenty of short dress silhouettes. These were often embellished by a zipper twisted into a heart motif. It was a playful poke at the metal hardware of days gone by. Who could forget Liz Hurley stealing her more famous boyfriend’s thunder on the red carpet in a Versace gown made up of some black fabric and a bunch of safety pins? A far cry from the House’s print this season which was a summery mix of starfish, shells, and girl faces, hand-drawn and painted by Julie Verhoeven.
