SHANGHAI: Disney Store Opens Today

Disney Fans Rejoice! The world’s largest Disney store is unveiled today at Lujiazui, Shanghai at the foot of the iconic Oriental Pearl TV Tower. The opening coincides with the date of May 20, which is a common homophonic pun for “I Love You” when the date is said in Mandarin.

Although Shanghai Disney Resort is still under construction, all the characters from the dreamland can be found in the new 860 sq.m (9257 sq ft) shop.

Entering the “Magic Kingdom” and following the sparkling blue alley lightened by Tinker Bell, visitors are first greeted by Mickey, Minnie and their friends in a hot-air balloon. 12 Disney Princesses, Magic Mirror from Snow White, and Disney Gate from Monsters University all come to life as the magic alley reveals itself, presenting all the characters from Disney, Pixar, and Lucasfilm. The most exciting part is undoubtedly the Marvel area, stocking almost life-size characters including Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and WGSN’s favourite – Captain America in Shanghai only. Designed by the Disney team, the concept retail space is characteristic of Shanghai. For example, the Shanghai skyline wall incorporates Disney stories with famous architecture from the city such as Shanghai Grand Theatre, Shanghai Museum, and Nanpu Bridge, while limited edition “I Love Shanghai” souvenirs are only available during the opening. Stay tuned for the opening of Disney Resort next year. –Maria Mao Cui
