SAO PAULO: Gap Opens

Since 1969, the US brand Gap has been outfitting the world in its casual basics, but until the recent opening of its São Paulo store the only place to find Gap goods in Brazil was in select Dufry airport locations. The second floor of upscale shopping mall JK Iguatemi is now home to this classic brand, stocking apparel and accessories for the whole family.

This new Gap location was a long time coming, with six years of analysis of the Brazilian market preceding its highly anticipated opening. This Gap store may have the same bright and colorful merchandising filled with classic clothing across all markets as any other Gap, but one thing is different: price. Due to Brazil’s strict tariffs and other import costs and logistics, prices at this particular location are around 30% to 40% higher than those in the U.S. That hasn’t stopped shoppers from stocking up on warm weather gear perfect for summer, from sundresses and shorts to tanks and swimwear. -Ashley Churchill
