Dirndls, with their gathered waists and poufy volume, once inspired Vivienne Westwood to say, “There would be no ugliness in the world if every woman wore a dirndl.” Both skirts and dresses in dirndl shapes emerged on first day of New York Fashion Week. Fabrics ranged from printed matelassés to simple cottons, and lengths hit anywhere from mid-thigh to mid-knee to mid-calf. — Sharon Graubard
