New York: It’s safe to say 90s grunge revivals have been done to death on runways in recent years, but leave it to the Rodarte girls to refresh the concept and assert the staying power of the rebellious stoner look. Perhaps Kate and Laura Mulleavy were tapping into the fascination young label devotees like wunderkind Tavi Gevinson have with the slacker decade, collating splashy tie-dye silks, cropped leggings, deconstructed skirts and aggressively high-cut stretch body suits. Accessorized with bright, punky hair, faux-tattoo socks by Scott Campbell, chain belts, spiked pendant necklaces and high-heeled creepers, each fluid ensemble had a romantic meets tough girl feeling that is pure catnip to teenagers. At times, this conflicted adolescent sense of self produced some pleasingly sexy looks, rare at Rodarte, such as sheer ruffled camisole gowns or cutout frocks constructed from tiger print jacquard and chiffon—prom wear for the coolest girl in art class.—Nina Stotler
