New York: Nature isn’t a new theme for the Mulleavy sisters: last season, California redwoods inspired their wood grain motifs, and for this season, they looked to the windswept prairies of the Midwest. Prints depicting blowing wheat and blue or sunset skies conjured scenes from the Terrence Malick film Days of Heaven, and the humble, crafted pieces supported the reference. Calico prints, long hourglass coats, prairie dresses and quilt-inspired piecing were borrowed from the Dust Bowl, while signature cutouts and innovative fabrics gave them new life. Like last season, the designers presented more wearable pieces than in their earlier, artsy collections; high-waisted slim pants and hand-knit color-blocked sweaters were appealing and approachable – sure to please both their followers and the retailers.
