BUILDING A MYSTERY
Milan: Roberto Cavalli eschewed the wild prints and colors he is known for this season, opting instead for subtle satin, slick leather and feathered fur in a deep palette of black, oxblood, teal and mustard. Flash was traded for straightforward opulence and textures were pleasingly rich and layered, with the Cavalli woman appearing more covered up than usual in high-necked chiffon blouses, tiered mini dresses fashioned from wide folded fringe as well as plenty of weighty outerwear. In fact, the designer’s party dresses took a backseat to cropped brocade boleros trimmed in feathers, motorcycle jackets with round fur shoulders, and double breasted coats printed with ghostly tonal leopard spots. Despite the lack of skin, Cavalli’s muse held plenty of allure, achieving a new mystery and welcome dimension.—Nina Stotler
