New York: In an interview about his Pre-Fall collection, Robert Rodriguez revealed a somewhat surprising inspiration behind the offering – a stack of black shopping bags. Rodriguez told reporters that he noticed the bags while sitting in his studio one day and began cutting into them, creating a range of geometric shapes. The shapes he created were represented with color blocking, while crisp cotton and bonded suitings referenced the stiff paper of the shopping bags. Flounces, gathering, and filmy silks provided a more feminine counter balance, while cutouts, slick leather, grommets, and an abstract camouflage pattern added an edgy element. Speaking of edgy, the designer presented a range of motorcycle jackets this season, many featuring piecing and/or color blocking. Pants were slouchy and tapered, while dresses were form-fitting, giving Rodriguez’s client plenty of silhouette options. Shopping came up again when the designer spoke of his intentions for the clothes. He said that he hoped girls would snap them up at the stores. With so many wearable, contemporary options, they surely will.–Joanna Manganaro
