Paris: Rick Owens’ dark elegance has inspired countless imitators, but this season’s collection demonstrated why none can compare to the original. Having said he was interested in control this season, Owens pared things down to serene, simple pieces that projected a haunting grace. The first look established the silhouette with a draped long dress made from weightless white silk, its volume drawn in with a stiff canvas jacket. The shape continued in a range of tones – taupe, olive and black – with some versions featuring an austere leather tunic and others a soft silk bodice piece. The designer also presented a mid-thigh option with full, layered skirts slashed at the sides for a kilt-like effect, styled with draped jersey tops and sometimes a leather cummerbund to cinch in the waist. Antennae-like headpieces made from horn and swooping black eyeshadow added an otherworldly touch; the Rick Owens girl is anything but ordinary with her edgy yet wraithlike elegance.
