Paris: Inspired by Monasticism, an ascetic way of life characterized by the renouncing of worldly pursuits to fully devote oneself to spiritual work, Rick Owen’ designs have never looked so vulnerable. For S/S 11, the designer wanted the fabrics to speak for themselves — which included sheer jersey, wool crepe and of course, leather. The colors emphasized the theme with names like “jet black”, “habit brown” and “pristine white”. High-shafted boots grounded dropped crotch shorts, and long coats (sans lapels) evolved Owen’s signature tweaked silhouettes for another season. Standout styles included pieced leather vests and jackets that suggested protective armor for Owens’ spiritual warrior. Never one to shy away from visions of a dark world, S/S 11 came across as a surprisingly idealistic view of the future.
