FASHION’S FRONT LINES
New York: Richard Chai, the master of super-luxurious layering, merged inspirations from European backpackers, military uniforms, grunge and the SoCal surf scene for his S/S 11 collection. This mix of calm and intense worked well, especially with punches of bottle green and inky blue — a first for the designer, who usually sticks to neutrals like olive drab and dove grey. Despite the utilitarian clothes, styling came across relaxed and lounge-y, and the tonal variations of solids had a sleek minimal effect. Mixed patterns came washed-out and subdued and sleeveless fatigue jackets, worn over fisherman’s sweaters, contributed to this season’s easy-going mood.
