And so, it’s no wonder that as the temperatures have been rising, the presence of denim jackets within the UK womenswear retail arena have also started to rise.
“Overall, new-in jackets have increased 66.7% week on week, for w/e June 25, accounting for 4.4% of all new-in apparel as transitional products begin to surface,” explains the WGSN Instock team.
So what’s the appeal of the classic denim jacket? Well it’s the ideal summer evening occasion wear. But the styles are evolving, destroyed denim jackets are on the rise (reflecting what we’re seeing in denim trends for 2017 as whole), as well as new-in blazer volumes, which have increased 96.7% week on week.
“New-in denim jackets increased 79.5% week-on-week, with a 40.4% increase year-on-year. Rebellious streaks inspire studded detailing and frayed edges; a concept that will continue into A/W 17/18 with reconstructed seams and shearling collars as seen at Topshop Unique.”
Fancy your denim blue with a little more of a luxe feel? This is where the styling comes into play. We’re seeing denim jackets teamed with pearl embellishments, which can be marketed as a luxurious update to a traditionally casual fabric.
For retailers, adding beaded embellishments (subtly or exaggerated) can glamourise oversized boyfriend-fit jackets and offers opportunities for cross-occasion dressing.
Whichever way you rock it, the denim jacket is here to stay for summer 2017.
