Resort Collection 2017

The resort collections are their own rare beast, their main aim is to clothe you adequately for warm temperatures and make you dream of all the lovely things you want to pack for your next holiday. But even if you don’t have the cruise booked and a holiday seems like a far away concept right now, there are some key lessons from the catwalk that you can copy and paste, recreating the look within your own wardrobe stash (#because budgets), or inspiring you to buy one key resort piece that you throw into the mix.

Here are the key style lessons, study hard:

1.Embrace botanical prints.

As the world of fashion and interiors blend ever more with each other, key prints and motifs that we’re seeing take centre stage in interiors are also turning up on the catwalk. Case in point; botanical prints, spotted as a key print for S/S16 wall decor; this Valentino resort outfit gives it a fashion edge. This is a key piece for your wardrobe.

2. Pleated skirt

Erase every memory of the school playground, resort pleats are different. It’s about ditching the hot and sticky feeling for a skirt that looks chic and flows freely enough that you can get up from the chair with ease, rather than peeling yourself off. It’s also incredibly versatile, taking you from day to night.

3. The Slip Dress reimagined

You know the slip dress is magical, if you were smart you still have the one you bought in the 90s, but the resort slip dress gets up upgrade. It’s about how you style it, gone are the turtleneck sweaters you wore underneath it and the oversized parkas that you threw over your shoulders in the winter months. It’s about lighter summer shades now, and added lace for a hint of sultry rebellion.

4. Cricket whites

A clear palette is perfect for resort ( not in the least because it shows off a tan perfectly). This Helmut Lang outfit is a great reminder of how cricket whites in lighter textures, are the best pre-summer look. Opt for light cottons, and style by layering different lengths to edge up the look a bit.

 5. Black is still hot for resort

It’s easy to avoid black if you are packing for warm temps, unless your wardrobe is 90 per cent Wednesday Addams, or you are a New Yorker. But this season the resort collections have thrown up some key items in said black, that should not be dismissed. Summer days don’t automatically mean hot summer nights and for cooler evenings this is the ideal piece.

6. Channel your inner Alice in Wonderland

Resort is the time to embrace your inner Alice, there’s a feeling that pre-summer is all about shedding layers rather than dressing up, but this look from Fendi is all about playing with shapes and volume, print and colour. It’s not the time to be shy and retiring.

7.Crochet magic

For the S/S16 Tommy Hilfiger catwalk, Gigi Hadid and her crew headed down the runway in crochet bikinis in bold, Caribbean colour ways. Crochet is still bright and bold for pre-summer, but it’s more about full looks. You can team all the crochet pieces together, or opt for a key piece (shorts are ideal for this time of year) and rock psychedelic colours.
