One of the most exciting new brands we came across at the New York trade shows was Relique, the brainchild of college friends Chelsea Carson and Kaitlyn Vasquez. The inspiration behind their latest collection – fiery volcanoes amidst the snowy landscape of Iceland – serves as a larger metaphor for the brand’s incendiary aesthetic. One built on compelling juxtapositions of masculine/feminine, sporty/sexy and fashion/function. Think: the utilitarian mechanics of Alexander Wang and VPL mixed with the delicate finesse of the finest French lingerie houses.
Coolness comes from an icy-pale palette and gossamer meshes; heat from the pops of red and bondage details – the grey of ashes represents the interaction between the two. It is all layered into second-skin ensembles that thoroughly support the body but provide enough style to wear out – even in Iceland.
Formerly sold out of an Etsy shop, Relique will launch commercially in F/W 2013.
