For some time now, the Active Team has been eagerly awaiting the unveiling of REI’s brand new superstore on the corner of Lafayette and Houston Streets in New York City. Last week, we finally got what we’ve been waiting for – on Friday, December 2nd, REI officially opened its doors to the urban active and outdoor communities. A game-changer for the retail landscape in Lower Manhattan, the store is located inside – on three spacious floors – the 103-year old historical Puck Building. The store features a vast array of outdoor apparel and equipment along with a full-service repair shop, public access community space and a hard goods rental service.
Before the opening, we were invited on a private tour to scope out the space, and it really hit us, as we came to realize the massive (and impressive) undertaking that went into renovating and restoring the building. True to its environmentally-responsible mantra, REI repurposed a hefty amount of wood, iron and steel from the original structure and transformed it into various displays for gear and apparel.
It was amazing to see so many of the products we first saw at Outdoor Retailer – ranging from the ultralight puffer jackets from Patagonia to the Ahnu hiking boots in a subdued hue of purple with a minimal, design driven approach.
On Thursday night, before the official Friday opening, President and CEO of REI, Sally Jewell, was in attendance promoting the community-driven events that REI strives to bring to New York. REI welcomed over forty outdoor groups and organizations into a town hall meeting-style event, providing an opportunity for the outdoor community to connect. Completed by staff members, REI’s volunteer efforts will extend to all five boroughs, along with a well-organized outdoor classes and outings calendar – which are just some of the ways that REI is getting the urban environment excited and equipped to get outside.
