This past Saturday Stylesight was lucky to be part of history, as the New York Red Bulls unveiled their much awaited 200 million dollar stadium. Located just minutes across the river from New York in Harrison New Jersey, we arrived in style via PATH train.
For anyone who has watched the ebb and flow of soccer in America, this was truly a special event. Over the past few years’ soccer specific stadiums have popped up, but none on the scale of Red Bull Arena. Some would say this was 30+ years in the making going all the way back to the NY Cosmos days.
25,000 people packed in as Kelly Rowland sang the anthem and recent Olympic hero Lindsay Vonn flipped the coin among other celebs on hand.
To help kick-start things legendary Brazilian club Santos was brought in for this friendly match. Santos is most notably known for producing Pele and Pele played out his career in New York, so the choice in opponent seemed fitting.
As opening matches go the results could not have been better, as the Red Bulls plastered Santos with ease 3-1. With a large local Brazilian population there was a big Santos support section, but it seemed even they enjoyed the night.
The Stadium is truly one of the finest of its size in the world and undoubtedly this is a definitive 200 million dollar statement on the position of soccer in America today.
