You know they say the only things that haunt you, are the things you didn’t buy? I don’t technically have this problem, because I buy everything. It’s an issue I know, I am willing to accept this-it’s just who I am.
Happily, my latest obsession is perfectly on trend, even if it’s a little out of my comfort zone: I’m talking about the colour red, in particular red shoes. We’ve spoken on WGSN Insider in the past here about the power of red, and how it can be interpreted as love, romance and desire.
And while the idea of red shoes might make you think of Dorothy trying to get home from Oz, the latest styles are less fairytale and more about using your footwear to make a statement.
A quick look at our Stylefile report for S/S17 (subscribers check it out here) reveals that red made its debut on the London catwalks at Ryan Lo, Mother of Pearl and Temperley London, during fashion week, staking its claim as one of the key colours of the season.
“Red makes a statement for footwear this season, offering a bright, saturated complement to ensembles. Suede and high-shine patent leather translate the rich quality of this striking colour trend, with shades ranging from highly saturated tomato red, concentrated coral and warming burgundy tones,” explains the WGSN footwear team.
Shape wise the London catwalk offered up everything from chunky summer sandals to patent leather boots and heels, and so for the consumer (i.e me), there are options for just how daring you can go with this look. “Glossy patent leather is a standout material on the London catwalks, highlighting kitsch retro 1990s references. Forecast for S/S 17, these slick leathers are used in singular colours to maximum effect”, add the footwear team.
A sexy red patent boot would be up my street and I would team it with some vintage black Levis jeans and a cute statement tee, to let the boots do all the talking. However, I am yet to come across this style in my price point. So, for now the high street interpretations of the look are key. In fact my A-HA moment happened while strolling the Topshop website, how smoking are these boots? Costing £55.00 and £72.00 respectively.
So, despite the erratic spring weather in the UK right now (where we find ourselves debating between a boot/ trainer or a sexy open toe mule) the red shoe offerings fit every bill.
Rainy days, dream of grabbing the simone Rocha Wellington boot, and on warmer days, rock your bright red sandals. It’s all about making a statement this season and using your footwear to stand out from the crowd.
