Reckless Preppy: Chris Benz

Chris Benz is one of those overachieving people who manage to simultaneously make me feel bad about my complete lack of life direction AND inspire me! What a combo! Benz grew up in Seattle, so I’m pretty sure he had a distinct advantage over my suburban Massachusetts upbringing, but that’s neither here nor there. At the tender age of 17, when I was working at a flower-shop, enjoying my junior year of high school and entertaining absolutely no thoughts of future careers, Chris Benz enrolled at Parsons for fashion design. It gets worse! While at Parsons, he had a two-year internship at (wait for it) MARC JACOBS, and went on to win the CFDA Emerging Designer Award upon graduating in 2004. He then went to work for J. Crew (my secretfavorite mall-store) designing dresses (my secretfavorite J. Crew items) before launching his eponymous line in February 2007 as part of NY Fashion week. Dude has got it goin’ on. Benz’s SS08 collection totally stole my heart away. It’s sportswear for hipsters, or as his obviously un-spellchecked website says, ‘The Chris Benz girl is an ageless sophisticate, a reckless preppy who desires nothing more than to “keep dancing.”‘ Let the music play.

those pink loafers break my heart (in a good way)

  • I just can’t get into the fluorescent colors. I think the yellow especially rubs me the wrong way. But, I do agree about the pink loafers, they are fab.

Ehn. I was really looking forward to Benz’s collection, and was pretty underwhelmed with what he presented. Nothing special or original or really even particularly flattering. I mean, come on, didn’t Chloe kick off what was to become a all-too-lengthy domination of neon sack dresses over the fashion world, like, four years ago?
