The Active Team just got back from the Handmade Bike Show in Austin, and we thought it would be the ideal time to post a video for the Rapha + Paul Smith SS11 Collection (you know, the one we have been fanning out over for months). We are huge supporters of both brands, in fact we had a chance to sit down with Rapha’s founder, Simon Mottrain, last October for a profile on the label. Here is what he had to say about the evolution of collaborating with Sir Paul…
“I’ve known Paul prior to Rapha’s beginnings. He has always been very supportive because he’s an ex-cyclist himself; cycling is the love of his life. Paul is just as passionate about the sport as I am. We would meet up every six months and when the Tour de France came to London in 2007 we decided it was a great opportunity to do something together. We ended up doing a jersey for the Grand Départ, which did incredibly well. At the time, I don’t think many fashion brands did anything on or about cycling. It was only in 2008-2009 that fashion labels started putting cycling into its collections. Paul was a little ahead of the curve because he is a fan.
We kept talking and wanted to do more together. This year we already sold some of his luggage and we’re about to launch an entire collaboration with a bit more range. We will have eight products for the Rapha x Paul Smith collection and it will start selling in October and with another ten to fifteen products for S/S 11. The products are very road racing inspired, but they are specifically made for city riding. It’s pretty exciting because it’s the first time we’ve done a proper range with him.”
Mottrain also revealed that Rapha, in general, is heavily influenced by the 50s and 60s, as those were the “glory years of road racing, due to the fact that the sport had amazing stature then and there was a sense a glamour and beauty about the sport, but also a real human element.” We think this is clearly evidenced in the video…set in LA, it reminds us of neo-beatniks on bikes, especially with the 60s split screen effect and cool-cat jazz soundtrack. Enjoy!
