Paris…Rei Kawakubo decided to take on elements of a “random collage” for S/S 10, sending a mismatched alternative reality down the runway to the surprise of show attendees. By far and away the strongest pieces of the collection, seemingly classic tailored jackets were layered with patterned silk ties and tartan pockets. Many of the looks had a subtle plaid or solid suiting skirts placed over a more classic pant, resulting in a more masculine-ized skirt look that became almost an afterthought. Who thought a skirt on a man would actually look subdued compared to other elements of a look? Other jackets received patches of striped knits and bold florals, some paired with floral pants and ice cream-hued monk strap shoes. The deliberate action of disobeying what classic items should look like is what made the spring Comme des Garcons assortment one of the strongest in recent seasons.
