Paris: Held at the former headquarters for the Credit Lyonnais bank, Raf Simons’ S/S 12 collection incorporated all that is wonderful about the massive space of multiple layers, glass floors and steel walls. The hyper-modern atmosphere was the perfect complement for the designer’s attempt at space age retro-ism, with all of its comic book brights, tropical intarsias and bold tartan plaids. In fact, the parade of models up and down the escalators resembled a Bauhaus-inspired factory from the future. The kaleidoscopic effect of monochromatic pattern and color-blocked tailoring injected new life into Simons’ design aesthetic — adding new dimension into what has become a uniform for his loyal followers. Even with all of the boxy fits and sleek suiting that we’ve come to expect from the collection, the subtle nostalgic remix was a completely appropriate addition a season full of so much optimism and ease. —Michael Fisher
