Raf Simons’ Calvin Klein: A breath of fresh air at NYFW A/W17

New York: To say that this presentation was the most anticipated event on the fashion calendar would be a misleading understatement. Raf Simons invited his well-heeled guests to sit within an artwork (one of three) that had been completed by Sterling Ruby at the behest of Simons. Presented within this installation was the debut collection for Calvin Klein completed by Creative director Pieter Mulier. Featuring both mens and womenswear, this collection was truly unique and a much needed breath of fresh air within the present political environs. The clean lines, the simple yet absolutely perfect tailoring, the 80s primary colours and the just so exquisitely rendered and handcrafted prints will take Americans back to their cultural heritage. And all this to the haunting soundtrack from David Bowie..This is not America.

To sum up in Raf Simons words: “It reflects the environment all these different people with different styles and dress codes. It’s the future, the past, Art Deco, the city, the American west..all of these things and none of these things. Not one era, not one thing, not one look. It is the coming together of different characters and different individuals, just like America itself. It is the unique beauty and emotion of America.

Indeed! This collection will touch the very soul of all Americans- Lizzy Bowring

Oh my god, seriously? Show me the perfect tailoring! So sick of this hype BS! My god, there are true masters in this world and this is not the work of one of them. Get a grip! Please.

Hi Christina, thanks so much for the comment. There was a lot of hype around the Raf Simons Calvin Klein debut and with good reason. Everything from the set design to the show had a huge impact on the season, and I’m sure that there will be many more talking points to come but this is one we felt deserved the attention. Sorry you didn’t agree with the review, happily it’s the differing opinions in fashion that is what makes it rich and diverse and always fun to debate. For example, with the r

Hi Carlene, I’m so happy that you recognize that we don’t all have to fall online line a string of cattle. Perhaps my comments should have been more delicately put but they reflect an honest perspective from someone in the industry. I have seen him do better and I don’t see how it reflects the perfection of tailoring that Calvin was so known for.

I agree with Christina and as I know her to be an exceptionally talented designer she certainly knows what she is talking about. I personally have loved some of the work Raf has done in the past but sad to say this is the least impressive of the lot. Somehow I think that the fashion industry needs to take a holiday away from it’s own hype and self indulgent nonsense, and take a stroll down to the last call racks where all this this stuff ends up eventually.
