New York: Indie darling Rachel Comey is known for putting her quirky twist on feminine basics, but this season the mother-to-be had a slightly more sophisticated point of view. Her signature sweet but quirky prints emerged about midway through the show with thready plaids, blotchy florals and stamped geometrics looking strongest when mix and matched together. Most interesting for the designer though, were the stark black and white looks that opened the show. Crisp white linen tops and airy dresses were given a touch of the extraordinary with delicate embroidery and extra-thin boning in the form of a lightly corseted dress. Flirty crop tops and elegant fluid silk drop crotch pants demonstrated Comey’s ability to make trend-driven pieces her own, but her ultra-basic high necked frocks were more than able to hold their own amid more complicated looks.
