Preen Pre-Fall 2013

Preen Pre-Fall 2013

New York: Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi turned to the gender-bending fashion icon, David Bowie, for inspiration for their Pre-Fall collection. It was a timely choice, as it seems Bowie is in the collection consciousness of late; a much-anticipated retrospective on him is opening this year at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. Rather than covering his oft-referenced Ziggy Stardust days, Thornton and Bregazzi focused on The Hunger, the 1983 film in which he and Catherine Deneuve play a vampire couple. The palette of black, white, and blood red was in keeping with the dark theme, and details from the 80s, such as tapered legs, zippers, sharp shoulders, and model Bo Don’s New Wave hairdo were a nod to the film’s era. Preen is known for its killer prints, and this season was not a disappointment. There was on-trend plaid, in addition to polka dots, animal spots, and wavy lines (and sometimes a combination of the three). Slim-fitting button-up shirts and roomy trousers were drawn from Bowie’s wardrobe in the film, while more feminine items, including sheaths featuring embroidery or lace panels were borrowed from Deneuve’s. The masculine-feminine mix was classic Bowie and give Preen’s hip followers plenty of appealing options.–Joanna Manganaro
