Prada & the Opera

For the new season of New York’s Metropolitan Opera, Miuccia Prada agreed to design the costumes for the cast of Attila.  Many of her most recent runway designs have found their way to a different kind of stage. For example, the leather strip fringe of her women’s dresses for F/W 09 now stream down a leather cape. The ubiquitous metal studs from the F/W 09 men’s collection pepper shoulders, a shirt front, and the tops of Attila’s boots. And the crumpled effect Prada used in her S/S 09 women’s collection now has a darker edge on long leather trenches, sometimes worn around the shoulders. The look is strong, simple, and clear. The set, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, looks like it would be right at home on the walls of Prada’s Tokyo dramatic flagship, which was also designed by the firm.
