New York: Dually inspired by a John Singer Sargent painting of a Parisian beggar girl and the Miss Havisham character in Great Expectations, much-buzzed-about designer Prabal Gurung sent out a collection that returned to his high-glam aesthetic and also incorporated the more relaxed sensibility he displayed in his sporty spring collection. The opening dress, a draped crimson frock in a slight state of déshabillé, set the tone for the show. Chiffon frocks, peasant blouses and mermaid maxis overflowed with the same sense of romance but also contained a wild, savage quality with asymmetrical flourishes, leather accents and ombré-streaked furs.
