Mara Sohn, a writer for San Francisco’s “locals” blog The Bold Italic conceptualized the idea of pop-up yoga. Sohn partnered with yogi Nadine Johnson for a trial Detox Flow morning yoga class in the city’s Dolores Park one Saturday in March. The event publicized only via Facebook and Twitter was a success and Johnson subsequently bought the domain name www.popupyoga.com.
Retail giant The Gap previously hosted a pop-up yoga studio in their rotating concept store space next to the Fifth Avenue flagship in New York in 2009. As summer approaches many yoga studios and indoor sports groups are adopting the idea of taking leisure activities outside in an informal and temporary setting.
