Plus-size: Huge, new drama on ABC Family

Huge, a new drama on ABC Family, tackles the issues of obesity and body image head-on, in what critics call a hybrid of hit shows Glee and Ugly Betty.

Based on Sasha Paley’s book of the same name, the show follows seven teenagers and staff at a weight-loss summer camp. The novel was adapted for television by Winnie Holzman, creator of My So-Called Life, with her daughter, Savannah Dooley.

Nikki Blonsky stars as Willamina, a girl determined not to lose weight in rebellion against her parents who forced her to spend her summer at Camp Victory. Willamina, a.k.a. Will, makes friends and enemies during her time at the camp as she struggles with acceptance of herself and others.

While the cast deals with obesity issues for one hour each Monday night, the show has also inspired a national tour, Live Huge to encourage healthy lifestyles. Tips for healthy eating, exercise, and building self-esteem are available on the show’s website, along with a panel discussion where healthy-lifestyle experts from the organization America on the Move are available to answer health questions.

Fashion also plays a role in the show, with tips on style and how to get looks from the show also available on the website.
